How to care for a crystal bracelet

A crystal bracelet isn't fragile, but it does change over time. Here are the basic moves to keep it with you for a while.

What to keep it away from

  • Chemicals: perfume, hand cream, dishwashing liquid, hairspray, alcohol-based sanitizer. These dull the surface of the crystal and oxidize metal pieces. Put your bracelet on after makeup and skincare. Take it off before washing your hands.
  • Sauna, hot spring, hot showers: high heat and steam can change the color and clarity of some stones (especially moonstone, fluorite, aquamarine).
  • Heavy exercise: not because the crystal will break, but the friction loosens the cord over time and eventually snaps it.
  • Manual work: take it off before lifting, cooking, or anything with a lot of grip motion.

How to clean it

Natural crystal handles a quick rinse:

  1. Take the bracelet off and rinse under cool running water for about 30 seconds
  2. Pat dry with a soft cloth (a glasses cloth works)
  3. Air dry. No hair dryer, no direct sunlight.

Don't use:
- Ultrasonic cleaners (they'll crack stones with internal inclusions)
- Dish soap or liquid cleansers
- Toothpaste (despite what online tutorials say, it scratches the surface)

How to store it

  • When you're not wearing it, keep it in the Mio&Gem pouch, separately. Don't toss it in with other metal jewelry.
  • Out of direct light, away from high heat or damp. A drawer is fine. No special box needed.
  • If you're not wearing it for a while (more than a month), give it a quick rinse before you put it away.

How often to "cleanse" it

We don't make claims about energy cleansing. But on a basic physical level, rinsing it once a week to remove surface oils and sweat is a good habit. Moonstone and rose quartz can sit under moonlight for half an hour to take on a softer quality. That's a habit, not a ritual.

If the cord breaks

  • Don't try to restring it yourself. The bead order and spacer placement were designed.
  • Email hello@mioandgem.com with a photo of the break.
  • First-time restringing is free. You cover return shipping. We cover the labor.

Is it normal for the color to change after wearing it for a while

Yes. Natural stone reacts to skin oils, sunlight, and air over time. Moonstone may get brighter. Amethyst may lighten slightly. That's the stone recording the time you've worn it.

What's not normal: visible scratches, cracks, or sudden dramatic color shift. If that happens, email us and we'll take a look.
